Jackie Robinson
Jack Roosevelt Robinson came from a poor background, but he broke the color barrier in baseball and became one of America's most beloved people. Robinson was a strong supporter of integration. He used his huge fame to speak out against the racism he saw on and off the field, which upset fans, the press, and even teammates who had once praised him for "turning the other cheek." After baseball, he became a widely-read newspaper columnist, a divisive political activist, and a tireless civil rights activist. Later, he struggled to stay relevant as diabetes crippled his body and a new generation of leaders took the civil rights movement in a more violent direction.
