When a Woman Ascends the Stairs

Everybody calls Keiko "Mama." She is a hostess on the Ginza, 30 years old, and a widow, and she tells us her life story. She talks about how life is like a circle: acting happy around drunks, dressing well and living well to show confidence, needing money to pay for these things and for her demanding mother and brother, and knowing that she's getting older. Because of her tarnished job, it's hard for her to get married. She could also be kept, or she could take out a loan to buy a bar of her own. Each way has its own risks, such as investors demanding a return on their loans. Is what men think of Keiko really what they seem to be? Is she able to make a decision?
