Wealthy American house wife Mary Morgan takes son George was by her out-of-school for home education,for example a vacation to Southern Africa. A mosquito that crawls through a hole into his net and also dies of malaria bites whilst in Mozambique George. After his funeral at home Mary feels a compulsion to return to Africa where she meets with British girl Martha O'Connell,whose 2-4 year-old son Ben, a teacher having voluntary service overseas,has also died of malaria. Ben gave his net to one of his students,believing malaria can not be caught by adults. Both women are shocked to see that the death rate brought on by the illness and,Mary petitions the government to change things whilst Martha remains being a helper in Africa. Martha turns up at Mary's house unannounced and, helped by the ex-diplomat father of Mary,they address a senate committee on health spending,persuading them to do more to combat malaria. Though a coda says that more can be done, they meet with a few success.
