Hathi

Approximately 5,000 years ago, people in India began capturing and domesticating elephants for use in warfare, religious ceremonies, and public displays. Young Makbul continues to spend his formative years in frequent contact with wild and farmed elephants in the forest near his hamlet in southern India. Despite his mother's protests, Makbul decides to follow in the footsteps of his father and grandfather by moving deep into the forest to train to become a mahout, or government-employed elephant handler. Newborn elephant Vikrama is entrusted to Makbul's care.
