The story follows Dr. Eduardo Plarr, a half-English, half-Latino who fled his own nation for a better life. Along the journey he meets British Consul Charley Fortnum, a diplomat in Latin America working to stop the Revolution. He's a regretful alcoholic. Clara is another lady the doctor meets and falls in love with, although Clara is Charley's wife.
