Colliding Dreams
We live in a moment in time when the battle, today more than a hundred years old, continues to be of overwhelming political and societal importance. From its beginning, that battle has also, obviously, had troubling and powerful consequences for Palestinians and Israelis themselves. The story at its most basic level is the one which involves two individuals fighting in a small but mathematically substantial parcel of land for national recognition and saying. The tragedy with this history, as both the Israeli novelist, Amos Oz, and the Allied scholar, Sari Nusseibeh, have pointed out, stems from a battle involving the rights of two individuals with equal and legitimate aspirations to nationhood and self-expression in just one small land to which they can both lay claim.
