The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny
At the Teatro Real de Madrid, the Catalan group La Fura dels Baus presents a bruising new production of Kurt Weill's Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny. Composed in the 1930s by Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht, this is a mordant parody on capitalism and the relentless industrialisation of a society where the ultimate criminal is lack of money. The authors relate the narrative of Mahagonny, a city lost in the desert and ruled by three thugs; food, sex, gambling, and violence reign supreme in Mahagonny.
