The Metamorphosis of Birds
On her 21st birthday, Beatriz married Henrique. Henrique, a naval officer, would be at sea for extended periods of time. Beatriz, who learned everything from the verticality of plants, took great care of their six children's roots ashore. My father's oldest son, Jacinto (Hyacinth), fantasized about becoming a bird. Beatriz died unexpectedly one day. My mother died gradually, but she died when I was 17 years old. On that day, my father and I met in the aftermath of our mothers' deaths, and our relationship was no longer solely that of father and daughter.
