The Last Days on Mars

On the last afternoon of the first manned mission to Mars, a team member of Tantalus Base considers he has made an astonishing discovery -- fossilized signs of life. Unwilling to let all the glory is claimed by the relief team, he disobeys orders to package up and goes outside on an expedition that is unmanned to get samples. However, a routine excavation turns to tragedy when the ground collapses and he drops into a deep crevice and close certain death. His devastated colleagues try to recover his body. However, when another vanishes, they start to guess that the lifeform they've discovered is perhaps not without danger.
