The Andromeda Strain

When virtually most of the residents of Piedmont are dead after the return the head of this US Air Force's Project Scoop declares a crisis. A group of distinguished scientists led by Dr. Jeremy Stone scramble into a laboratory and attempt to isolate the life form while determining the two individuals from Piedmont - an old alcoholic and also a six-month-old baby - survived. The scientists methodically study the lifeform that is alien unaware it presents a far greater danger at the laboratory, which is equipped with a nuclear device designed to keep the flow of dangerous biological agents and has mutated. .
