Little Miss Marker

Big Steve Halloway, a gambler and owner of New York's Horseshoe Cabaret, needs money. Dream Prince is a racehorse owned by Sorrowful Jones. A gambler who has lost $500 wants to place a bet but only has $20 on him when all bets are placed at the window. Instead, he uses his daughter Marthy Jane (Shirley Temple) as a "marker" or security. He kills himself after losing his bet, leaving "little Miss Marker" in the care of Sorrowful Jones. The "gold digger" helps the "tight-wod" with his problems as Steve hides in Chicago to avoid being investigated for his shady bets. He returns to New York when he discovers Bangles' involvement with Sorrowful.
