Despite the fact that Samantha Hughes was born in Kentucky, she has never met her father, who died in Vietnam before she was born. Samantha lives with her uncle Emmett, who was also a combat veteran of the Vietnam War. When Emmett is not working, he spends his time hanging out with three other Vietnam veterans: Tom, Earl and Pete. Like Emmett, they are all dealing with issues related to their service in the war. Samantha becomes intrigued with the prospect of discovering the identity of her father.
